CHARDY PLAYS AGAINST FUCSOVICS

Mary Pierce’s countryman, Jeremy Chardy, will play against Marton Fucsovics of Hungary in the opening round of the Metz Open tomorrow.

Chardy has been given the 7th seed in this tournament and he is entering this match as the top favourite as his opponent is way below in the world rankings than him. The 26 years old Frenchman is playing on his home soil, so, that will help him too.

As far as Chardy’s recent form is concerned, he has struggled big time after the Wimbledon Championships. He has taken part in quite a few tournaments off late, but, has failed in making his mark in either of them.  In the recently played US Open, he got knocked out from the second round.

Chardy may be lacking rhythm at this point of time, but, one thing is for sure that if it’s his day and he gets going, he can defeat even the finest of players on the tour. The fans would not have forgotten the upset that he had pulled off in the Australian Open at the start of this year by defeating the Argentinean no. 1 Juan Martin Del Potro.

Chardy believes in playing aggressive tennis and he can be terrible at times, but, in form, he can just take his opponent apart.

On the other hand, Chardy’s opponent Fucsovics is just 21 years of age at the moment and he hasn’t done anything extraordinary at this level. Yes, he played some good tennis in the qualifiers and made it to the main draw, but, now, facing Chardy who is 200 positions higher in the world rankings will be a real challenge for him.

This is the first time that these two players are going to take on each other.

FRANCE VS CROATIA

Mary Pierce’s countryman, Jeremy Chardy, will take on the local lad Milos Raonic in the first round of the Rogers Cup.

This will be the second meeting between these two players. The only match played between them so far was won by Raonic.

Raonic’s recent form has been good. The Canadian player hadn’t made a great start to the season and had moved down to no. 18 in the world rankings.

But, in the last 2-3 months, he has put up some good performances and is currently ranked 13th in the world.

Raonic is a big serving player and he hits quite a few aces. In fact, he is at no. 4 in the list of leading ace hitters this year. So, he is quite good in that part of his game, but, he struggles in other areas especially when it comes to playing backhand shots. If he has to do well consistently against the top players in the world, he will have to work hard on those areas.

There are massive expectations with Raonic in this tournament which might pressurize him a little bit. Playing in front of jam packed home crowd isn’t always easy especially for a young player.

Chardy on the other hand hasn’t had an impressive season at all. There is no doubt that he has got a lot of potential, but, he hasn’t lived up to it so far in his career. His current world ranking is 27.

Chardy has played 32 matches this season till now out of which he has won 16 and has lost 16. In his last 3 matches, he has ended up on the losing side.

However, both these players are hugely talented and on their day, they can be quite hard to beat. It’s expected to be a cracker of a contest. On the basis of current form, Raonic might be considered as the favourite.

MONFILS WINS

Mary Pierce’s countryman, Gael Monfils, has defeated Milos Raonic of Canada in the first round of the ongoing Gerry Weber Open. Monfils won the match in the straight sets by 6-4, 6-2.

It was a clinical performance by Monfils. He just crushed his opponent by playing some high class tennis.

It was the second match between these two players and Monfils has won all of them.

In the post match interview, Monfils said, “I love playing in Germany. The intensity of the crowd here is just magnificent.  They make a lot of noise and they are into the contest all the time. I enjoy such kind of environment.”

Monfils had a wonderful start in the opening set. The first two games went with the serve which kept the scores levelled at 1-1.

Monfils sneaked a breakthrough in the 3rd game and then, held his serve in the 4th game to get ahead by 3-1. The Frenchman only needed to win his remaining service games after that to clinch the set and he did that without any trouble.

Monfils started in the same manner in the proceeding set as well. With a breakthrough in the first game and a serve hold in the next game, he took a lead of 2-0.

There were no breakthroughs in the next couple of games and when the 4th game ended, Monfils was leading by 3-1.

The Frenchman broke Raonic’s serve again in the 5th game and then, by serving out the next game, he enhanced his lead to 5-1.

Raonic needed to sneak a couple of breakthroughs to come back into the contest, but, the Canadian player didn’t get even one. Monfils finished off the match with a serve hold in the 8th game and moved into the next round where he will face Jan Hernych of Czech Republic.

ROBSON BEATS VENUS

Venus Williams has been defeated by Laura Robson of Britain in the first round of Internazionali BNL d’Italia. Robson won the match in the straight sets by 6-3, 6-2.

This was the first match between these two players and very few people would have expected the 19 years old British youngster to get better of a veteran like Venus. But, Robson pulled off an upset by playing some superb tennis. She took 85 minutes to win this match.

In the post match interview, Robson said, “It feels great to win against a great player like Venus. I was having a bit of difficulty in the first set because of the wind, but, slowly, I settled down.”

“I was really excited to play against Venus. She is one of my role models and I wanted to play against her since a long time. Finally, I got that opportunity today and I won. So, it’s like icing on the cake.”

In the first set, both the players held their serve in the first couple of games. After that, Robson just took Venus apart with some terrific shots.

The British youngster broke Venus’ serve in the 3rd and the 5th game and won the next 4 games in a row to get ahead by 5-1.

Although, Venus made a bit of a comeback by holding her serve in the 7th game and then, by breaking Robson’s serve in the 8th game to reduce the lead to 3-5, but that was too little too late for the American veteran. Robson got yet another breakthrough in the 9th game and sealed the set by 6-3.

In the second set, Robson got even more aggressive. She broke Venus’ serve three times and won the set by 6-2 to make her way into the second round.
